The society is a non-profit organisation. Its purposes are the promotion of research,
teaching and publication in the field of pharmaceutical history as well as the
dissemination of knowledge in pharmaceutical history. The society aims to find
new friends in Austria who are interested in the history of pharmacy. Membership
is open to anybody who supports the society and promotes its goals.
On August 18, 1926, the Society for the History of Pharmacy was founded in Hall/Tyrol
by the initiative of the Austrian pharmacist Ludwig Winkler. The society united
pharmacists from more than 14 countries, all of them taking great interest in
the history of their profession. However, the majority of the members came from
Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The society quickly developed into the International
Society for the History of Pharmacy (IGGP) and has greatly promoted research in
this field of science since then. In 1997 a fundamental revision of the society's
statutes formed a new society which now mainly acts as an umbrella organisation
for the national societies. The interests of each member country are represented
by delegates having votes in the executive committee of the IGGP.
