The
congress is held on the historical site of the Old Viennese General
Hospital, which, at the end of the 20th century, was changed into
a modern university campus whilst preserving the historical buildings.
Under the reign of the emperor Joseph II (1765-1790), the former poorhouse
was remodelled into a hospital following the plan of the Hôtel
Dieu in Paris. In 1784 the hospital was opened under the leadership
of the Imperial Physician Joseph Quarin (1733-1814). At that time
the hospital buildings comprised seven courtyards. In the 19th century
the hospital expanded and new buildings enclosing two more courtyards
were added. Famous physicians such as Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis (1818-65),
Theodor Billroth (1829-94) or Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943) worked
there and contributed to the international reputation of the Viennese
Medical School.
Today, the university campus is home to various institutes of the
University of Vienna. It also houses a new congress centre which |
|
includes
a former lecture hall of the Art Nouveau period and rooms of the former
hospital pharmacy. Nearby, there are various museums and historical
collections which display objects of pharmaceutical and medical interest.
Visits to these interesting collections as well as a guided tour to
historic pharmacies in the centre of town will be offered during the
congress.
Additionally, the courtyards of the university campus house various
restaurants and cafes where the congress participants may relax or
meet for discussions. Especially the so-called Schanigärten
(gardens of restaurants and cafes) are popular meeting places for
young and old alike. As the congress venue is in the centre of town,
the historic district and the main boulevard, the Ringstraße,
with their impressive churches, palaces and museums are within walking
distance. Near the university campus there are many hotels of all
categories as well as numerous restaurants which offer Viennese and
international cuisine. |
